It’s definitely upon us! Halloween marks the end of fall and the beginning of the fun, glittery, sparkly holiday season. I love it. I’ve been working on some Christmas ornaments and thought I’d show you one I did tonight. Not the best pictures since I took them at night, but you get the idea.

And I also wanted to tell you how our halloween went. OK. So my oldest son went as Indiana Jones. It was a totally fun costume because we didn’t buy a costume, we kinda made it. We already had a cool old hat that looks just like Indy’s and then we added a brown (p)leather jacket, Khaki pants, and I tea-stained a white oxford to make it look dirty. We got a funky purse at the thrift store that looks just like Indy’s pack, so it was fun and perfect. My youngest son wanted to be Bumblebee, the yellow Transformer. I had to buy that one, because there is a limit to my costume creating skills. So, I bought it.
Now, here is where the fun comes in. On Halloween night, my youngest decided that he, too, wanted to be Indiana Jones. I tried every angle, every trick in my book to get him to go with the costume that I WASTED money on, but nope, he was dead set. I told him I wasn’t buying anything, that we just had to make due with what we had. He looked more like a cowboy carrying a purse and a home-made whip, but he’s 3 so he didn’t care. Oh, and on a sidenote….. my kids want the “Indiana Jones SOUND EFFECTS WHIP” which is a complete horror because it is, well, a SOUND EFFECTS toy. But, what’s funny is that my 3 year old inverts the first letters on Sound and the second letter on Effects, so instead he ends up telling everyone that he wants an “Indiana Jones FOUND-A-Sex-Whip”. I am not kidding. I couldn’t make this stuff up. He mentioned it to the pediatrician the other day who, I seriously thought was going to wet her pants. She actually snorted she laughed so hard. She then proceeded to tell the entire staff who also laughed wildly. We were quite the dog and pony show that day.
OK, crisis number two…. My oldest son realized he had LOST his pack for the Indy costume at about the time we were trying to leave to go trick-or-treating. And of course we tore the house apart looking for it, and he was in tears, and I was mad because “if you would clean your room……” blah blah blah…. But, because I love him more than is even comprehend-able, I felt very sorry for him. So I pulled a super mom and went through his dress-up clothes and found an old cowboy vest he had that was brown. I whipped out my pinking shears and cut a long strip. Then I used stitch-witchery to fashion a pack with a flap that folded over the front. It was actually pretty good and he was pretty excited about it. AS SOON AS I FINISHED IT, my husband found the original pack. *sigh*. It’s so funny. As a kid I always viewed the adults as authoritative and in control. Now, on the other end, I realize they were just trying to keep it all together and spent most of their lives serving US!
But once we hit the road, a good time was had by all. We live in a small town and a semi-rural area, but we do have neighborhoods. It’s fun because the parents usually drive the kids around in pickups or trailers, or whatever and the dads and kids pile out at every house. Such fun. Until we came home and my youngest threw up and has been throwing up ever since. Poor little fella. Can’t even enjoy his candy booty from the night.
So, with that, I say goodbye to fall and hello to the winter holidays. Bring on the snow, the glitter, the silver bells and spiced cider! I’m ready to put on a sweater, listen to some Steven Tyrell or Norah Jones and settle in for a long winter’s nap.
I hope you had a fun and safe Halloween. Mom, if you’re reading this, thank you for all the last minute feverish repairs to costumes, cupcakes at 10:00 at night, and all the other crazy things that moms do out of love and kids never understand until they have kids themselves. And, now I know why you did it all, because we mothers know that really, we are the privileged ones, we are blessed to have the honor to take care of these sweet babies. Thank you, God for my beautiful babies.
